Figure 14

Sea breezes

Sea breezes are a sailor’s lifeline on hot, balmy summer days. They are caused by the difference in warming characteristics between land and sea (Figure 14).

The land will heat up faster than the sea, and so the air above the land will heat up faster than that above the sea. This makes it expand and rise up. As it expands upwards, it also expands outwards, and pushes out to sea. As there is now physically less air over the land and more air over the sea, a localized low pressure is formed over the land, and a localized high pressure is formed over the sea, which causes a sea level breeze– the sea breeze– to blow from the sea towards the shore.

Tips

Know your limitations.

Always get a forecast for the time you intend to sail plus a bit.

Always tell someone where you are going and when you intend to be back.
